One of the antennas was damaged on launch site in mid August 1997. The satellite has power problems during eclipses which causes the need to shutdown part of the transponders during such times.

Therefore a claim was filled for insurances as a constructive total loss of the satellite because the company has ceased using all of the Ku-band capacity of the satellite on a full-time basis, and this capacity represents more than 50% of the satellite's communications capacity.
PAS 5 was leased in May 2002 to the Arab Satellite Communications Organisation (Arabsat), which planned to use the spacecraft's C-band transponders to complement its partially defunct Arabsat 3A at 26 degrees East. Intelsat changed the name of the PAS satellites to Intelsat effective to 1. February 2007.

Has GaAs (gallium arsenide) solar cells, "advanced" batteries. It is the first commercial satellite to launch with the XIPS thrusters that should provide 5 additional lifetime years. Liquid propellant thrusters provide 15 years lifetime. Some problems developped with XIPS and software patches were uploaded.

The battery degradation is said to be owing to "soft" short circuits inside the battery caused by too much electrolyte. PAS-5 is the first HS-601HP model in orbit, and the problem would be corrected in future satellites.

Is the first satellite to use dual-junction solar cells from Spectrolabs.
